چکیده
In the past 20 years extensive research on visuoperceptual disorders after focal brain damage has shown that injury to the right cerebral hemisphere is especially detrimental to performance on several tasks involving processing of visual stimuli. Individual findings, however, have so far proved to be scarcely susceptible of a unitary interpretation. Isolated explanatory essays relating interhemispheric asymmetries in perception to stimulus characteristics, either physical (Meier and French, 1965; De Renzi and Spinnler, 1966; Milner, 1967) or semantic (Kimura, 1963; Milner, 1967; De Renzi et al., 1969), or to different strategy along the analyticholistic dimension of visual processing (LevyAgresti and Sperry, 1968; Nebes, 1971; Levy et al., 1972) are not exempt from criticism and/or cannot cope with the whole body of empirical findings. Bisiach and Faglioni's (1974) data have indeed challenged the view according to which right brain-damaged are more impaired than left brain-damaged patients in visual processing of complex patterns. On the other hand, an investigation by Basso et al. (1974) on the susceptibility of unilateral brain-damaged patients to the Mueller-Lyer illusion failed to confirm the

متن کاملEmbryonic light stimulation induces different asymmetries in visuoperceptual and visuomotor pathways of pigeons.
In birds, visual object discrimination performance is lateralized with a dominance of the right eye/left hemisphere. This asymmetry is induced by embryonic light stimulation. However, visually guided behavior, even during simple object distinction tasks, is composed of different behavioral and neural modules. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to test whether all neural subsystems invo...
متن کاملQuantitative evaluation of Blood Brain Barrier permeability in transient focal cerebral ischemia in the rat
Introduction: Development of brain edema following focal cerebral ischemia exacerbates primary ischemic injury. Blood brain barrier (BBB) opening is an important part of edema named as vasogenic brain edema. In this study, quantitative alterations of BBB permeability is experimentally evaluated using transient focal cerebral ischemia in the rat. Methods: Two groups of male rats (ischemic and sh...
متن کاملStructure-function relations of lateralized visual behavior in the pigeon
Visual asymmetry in birds is induced by an embryonic right-eye light stimulation that establishes a left hemispheric superiority in object discrimination. It is possible that the prehatch asymmetry of light stimulation only alters visual circuits in the light-stimulated hemisphere, making that side dominant for some visual tasks. However several experiments clearly show that transient lateraliz...
متن کاملFactor structure of nonverbal cognition.
In order to define the factor structure of nonverbal cognitive processes, 156 twenty to sixty year-old participants were selected in Medellin (Colombia). A neuropsychological test battery for assessing different nonverbal cognitive domains (attention, memory, visuoperceptual and visuoconstructive abilities. executive functions, praxis abilities, and written calculation abilities) was administer...
